This is the head shrine of the sacred Mt. Ishizuchi, one of Japan's Seven Sacred Mountains, and its sacred mountain. Amidst a majestic atmosphere, this is a power spot where you can experience firsthand the faith in the sacred mountain of western Japan's highest peak.
Ishizuchi Shrine is the collective name for four shrines: the main shrine at the foot of the mountain, the Chugu Jojusha and Tsuchigoya Yohaiden shrines on the mountainside, and the Okumiya Chojosha shrine at the summit. The main shrine, located at the entrance to Mount Ishizuchi, serves as the base for worship. Passing through the large vermilion torii gate, a solemn atmosphere permeates the spacious grounds. Known since ancient times as a sacred place for Shugendo (mountaineering asceticism), it is said to have been founded by En no Gyoja, the founder of the sect.

The stone steps leading to the main shrine still feature handrails made from iron chains that were once used for the chain section at the summit, testifying to the shrine's history of worship.

The shrine grounds are primarily home to the main shrine, auxiliary shrines, and subordinate shrines.
The main shrine is a wooden, three-bay, nagare-zukuri style shrine, designated as an Important Cultural Property by the national government. Opposite the main shrine is a garden filled with flowers blooming throughout the seasons.
