Tosa Shrine is a historic shrine in Kochi City, the Ichinomiya of Tosa Province. With its unique "Yatombo (eight-legged mantis) style main hall and a deep history connected to Chosokabe Motochika, it is one of Kochi's most famous power spots.
Tosa Shrine, located in Kochi City, Kochi Prefecture, is the Ichinomiya (the highest-ranking shrine in the country) of Tosa Province and is affectionately known locally as "Otokoya." The main deities enshrined are Ajisuki Takahikone no Kami and Hitokotonushi no Kami, and the shrine has long been devoutly worshipped as gods of national development, industrial promotion, and matchmaking. Of particular note is the existing main hall, designated an Important Cultural Property by the national government, featuring a unique "irimoya-zukuri" style of architecture that differs from typical shrine architecture.

The main hall, worship hall, drum tower, and tower gate are also registered as Important Cultural Properties.

During the Sengoku period, Chosokabe Motochika, who unified Tosa, was a devout believer in the shrine and actively constructed and donated shrine buildings. The grounds are home to an arched bridge said to have been donated by Motochika, as well as a cedar tree said to have been used to pray for victory in battle, making this a must-see spot for history buffs. The spacious grounds are surrounded by lush greenery, and even walking along the approach path is refreshing and cleansing.

As noted in the Nihon Shoki and the Tosa Fudoki (lost texts), this ancient shrine has been worshiped since ancient times. In the Middle Ages and early modern period, it was revered as the guardian deity of Tosa Province, making it a representative shrine of Kochi Prefecture.

Various festivals are held throughout the year, and the autumn Shinane Festival is the largest in the prefecture, attracting many spectators with its spectacular portable shrine procession.

Also, on the adjacent east side of the site is the 30th temple of the Shikoku Pilgrimage.
