This temple is the starting point of the 88 sacred places of Shikoku, and is a special place for pilgrims. It has beautiful gardens and historic buildings, and tourists can also enjoy visiting and strolling around.
This is the first place people visit when starting their pilgrimage, and there is a corner where pilgrim goods are sold and pilgrimage etiquette is explained. Many pilgrims put on white robes, pick up their kongo staff and set off on their long journey here.

The temple grounds are spacious and have a beautiful, lush garden, where seasonal flowers soothe visitors. There are many historic buildings such as the main hall, pagoda, and Daishido, each of which speaks of a long history and evidence of faith.

It is said that Kobo Daishi chose this place as the first temple when he founded the Shikoku Pilgrimage because the scenery there resembles Mount Vulture in India.

There are also many buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties by the national government, such as the Niomon Gate and the pagoda.
