Fukiya Furusato Village in Takahashi City, Okayama Prefecture, is a village that once flourished due to its bengala and copper mines. The townscape remains characteristic of its copper-colored Sekishu tiles and bengala-colored walls, and it is a popular tourist spot where you can experience Japanese history and culture from the Edo period to the Meiji period.
Fukiya Furusato Village is designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the national government, and its greatest attraction is its beautiful, unified landscape. Bengala is a red pigment made mainly of iron oxide. It was produced in large quantities in this area from the late Edo period to the Meiji period, and was widely used in Japanese architecture and lacquerware. The houses of wealthy merchants and bengala factories, which tell of the area's prosperity, have been preserved as they were at the time, and you can see the history and technology up close.
The townscape, unified in the pale red of bengala (red iron oxide), is very beautiful and may be more charming than Kurashiki's Bikan Historical Quarter.

Walking through the townscape, you will feel as if you have traveled back in time. There are also many sights to see in the surrounding area, such as the old Fukiya Elementary School building and Hirokane Residence. At each facility, you can experience the lives and culture of the people of that time, and you will have a day full of learning. This is a representative tourist destination in Okayama that is especially recommended for those interested in Japanese history and traditional architecture.

Why is it located so deep in the mountains?
From Takahashi city, head north on National Route 180 and then Prefectural Route 85. It's about a 40-minute drive from the center of Takahashi city.

Also nearby, there are many places of interest that give you a feel of the Edo to Taisho periods, such as the Sasane Tunnel, where mining took place as Fukiya Copper Mine from the Edo period until the end of the Taisho period, and the Hirokane Residence, a village headman with a castle-like stone wall built at the end of the Tokugawa period.
