Matsumoto Castle, a national treasure, is located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, and originated from Fukashi Castle, which was built during the Sengoku period. It is said to be the oldest surviving five-story, six-storey castle tower in Japan, and is one of five castles designated as national treasures along with Hikone Castle, Himeji Castle, Inuyama Castle, and Matsue Castle. It is characterized by the unique contrast between its black lacquered clapboard and white plaster walls, and is also known as the "Crow Castle" due to its majestic appearance. The castle tower reflected in the water moat that surrounds it is a perfect subject, especially for photography enthusiasts.
Matsumoto Castle's castle tower has a rare structure, a composite castle tower that combines the "castle tower" from the Sengoku period with the "Tsukimi Tower" and "Tatsumitsuke Tower" that were added in the early Edo period. Although the exterior appears to be five stories, the interior is a six-story "watchtower-type" castle tower, and when you enter the castle, you will be amazed by its complex structure. In particular, the steep and large steps of the staircase give a sense of the defensive function of the time. On each floor, there are still mechanisms for battle, such as gun slits and stone drop chokes, allowing you to feel the tense atmosphere of the Sengoku period.

Matsumoto Castle shows various beautiful expressions throughout the year. In spring, the cherry blossoms planted along the inner moat bloom in full bloom, and the contrast between the black castle tower and the pink cherry blossoms is breathtakingly beautiful. In summer, the fresh green leaves shine brightly, in autumn the castle is decorated with autumn leaves, and in winter, it appears solemn against the backdrop of the snow-covered Northern Alps. Events are held according to each season, so you can discover different charms of Matsumoto Castle every time you visit.

The castle boasts a vast area, including the Honmaru Palace Garden and the Ninomaru Palace. From the Honmaru Palace Garden, you can enjoy a leisurely panoramic view of the castle tower, and you will be overwhelmed by its grandeur. The castle town also retains its historic streetscape, and it is recommended to stroll around Nawate-dori and Nakamachi-dori streets in addition to sightseeing at Matsumoto Castle. Matsumoto Castle, a national treasure that combines history, nature, and local culture, is a famous castle that represents Japan and continues to attract many people.

[Trivia]
Matsumoto Castle is also known as the "Crow Castle," which comes from the black exterior walls.

On the roof of the castle tower, there is a "Shachigawara" (roof tile), which is said to protect the castle from fire when turned upside down.

Inside the castle tower, everyday items and weapons from that time are on display, giving you a glimpse into the lives of samurai during the Sengoku period.
