Chizu-juku, located in Chizu Town, Yazu District, Tottori Prefecture, once flourished as a post town on the Inaba Kaido road, and is a "living townscape" where traditional architecture from the Edo period to the Meiji period still thrives. This post town stretches for about 1.5 km along the Chizu River, a tributary of the Chiyo River, and has been designated as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings by the national government, and its beautiful scenery makes visitors feel as if they have traveled back in time.
The townscape of Chizu-juku is decorated with beautiful houses with wooden walls and delicate lattice windows. In particular, the symbol of this post town is the "Ishitani Family Residence," which served as the headman of the post town. This magnificent mansion, designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan, is a truly impressive structure with its vast grounds, about 40 rooms, and a tasteful garden. You can get a glimpse of the highest quality architectural technology and lifestyle of the time, so a tour of the interior is a must. There are also buildings that convey the bustle of the past, and sturdy houses made of wood unique to the Chizu cedar production area, so you can feel the depth of history just by walking around.

However, on the other hand, "if you expect too much, you may feel a little disappointing." Rather than a perfectly maintained tourist destination like a theme park, it is more like historical buildings are integrated into the daily lives of actual people. As a result, there are not many shops, and in terms of liveliness, it may not be as lively as other famous tourist destinations. Nevertheless, there are cafes and galleries renovated from old houses, and small souvenir shops selling local products scattered throughout the area, making it the perfect place to relax and feel the history. It is a place where connoisseurs can enjoy themselves, such as the unique features of a post town, such as the Toriniwa (street garden), and carefully observing the beautiful grain of Chizu cedar.

Chizu-juku is not just a historical relic, but has the charm of being a "living post town" where people's lives still thrive. Every autumn, the Chizu-juku Snow Festival is held, where snow lanterns and snow sculptures decorate the townscape, creating a fantastic atmosphere. Although it is not flashy, it will surely appeal to experienced travelers who want to experience the original scenery and traditional culture of Japan in a quiet and calm atmosphere. It is a place that we highly recommend to those who are looking for a trip where they can feel the weight of history while experiencing the warmth of the local people.

Chizu Town is also known as the "Land of Forests" and is famous for producing high-quality "Chizu cedar". It is also used in many building materials for post towns.
Also, somewhere a little different is the Itaibara village, located deep in the mountains, which has been designated as a preservation district for groups of traditional buildings.
