Jomon Cedar is a gigantic Yakusugi tree that stands tall in Yakushima Town, Kagoshima Prefecture, and is estimated to be between 2,000 and 7,200 years old (there are various theories). It was discovered in 1966, and was given the name "Jomon Cedar" because its name comes from the Jomon period. Its overwhelming presence, with a height of 25.3m and a circumference of 16.4m at chest height, inspires awe in all who see it. It is a symbol of Yakushima, and was one of the reasons why Yakushima was registered as a World Heritage Site. It is a place that many climbers from Japan and abroad visit as a place everyone should visit at least once in their lifetime.
The path to Jomon Cedar is not flat at all. The most common climbing route is a long-distance trek that takes more than 10 hours round trip, covering 11km one way, by walking about 8.5km on the trolley road (old forest railway) from the Arakawa trailhead, and then another 2.5km on the mountain trail. The trolley road is relatively flat, but once you enter the mountain trail, there are many steep slopes, tree roots, and unstable footing, so proper climbing equipment and physical strength are essential. However, once you overcome the difficulties, the Jomon Cedar that awaits you will give you an indescribable sense of excitement and accomplishment. The scenery along the way is also full of highlights, such as the mossy forest, clear streams, and Wilson Stump (hollow inside and looks heart-shaped) along the way.
Jomon Cedar deeply impresses those who see it as a "proof of life" that has overcome various climate changes and natural disasters in the past due to its long age. Its appearance is like a work of art created by nature, and teaches us the value of history and life. Currently, Jomon Cedar is protected and cannot be touched directly, but you can view its majesty from the observation deck. Even from the deck, you can fully feel its huge size, the weight of history, and the strength of life.
Trekking to Jomon Cedar is not just a mountain climb, but a special experience that allows you to come face to face with the magnificent nature of Yakushima. The mysterious scenery of the moss-covered forest, the clear stream, and the Yakusugi trees that are hundreds or thousands of years old is reminiscent of the "forest of Princess Mononoke". It is common to start early in the morning and take on the climb as a day trip with a packed lunch, but the beauty of the nature you encounter along the way and the sense of solidarity with the other climbers you walk with will be unforgettable memories. Please try this special experience with careful preparation, sufficient physical strength, and above all, respect for nature.
[Trivia]
Jomon Cedar was named "Jomon Cedar" because it was estimated that the tree's age at the time of its discovery dates back to the Jomon period.
Wilson Stump, located on the hiking trail to Jomon Cedar, is a huge stump that is popular because when you enter its interior, it appears heart-shaped from a certain angle.
Yakushima was one of Japan's first Natural World Heritage Sites (registered in 1993), and Jomon Cedar is considered the symbol of the island.
