Daihonzan Eiheiji is one of the two head temples of the Soto sect of Buddhism in Fukui Prefecture. The temple buildings and monks standing deep in the mountains are impressive, and you can experience the world of Zen in a solemn atmosphere.
Daihonzan Eiheiji is a head temple located in Eiheiji-cho, Yoshida-gun, Fukui Prefecture, and was founded in 1244 by Zen Master Dogen, the founder of the Soto sect. The temple is dotted in the deep mountains, surrounded by giant cedar trees that are said to be about 700 years old, and is known as a Zen training dojo with a dignified atmosphere. In the quiet and solemn atmosphere, you can still see many monks practicing their daily training. It is a valuable place where you can deeply experience Japanese Buddhist culture and the spirit of Zen.

In the vast grounds, the main buildings called the "Seven Halls of Temples" are connected by corridors, and have functional beauty as a place of training. In particular, each building has its own meaning, such as the main hall "Buddha Hall," the "Sodo" where monks eat and sleep, and the "Daikuin" where they study the teachings of Zen. Walking along the corridors, you will feel the cool air and the scent of wood, and feel a sense of calm. The moss-covered garden and the beautiful colors of the trees throughout the seasons allow you to experience the world of Zen along with the changing of nature.

Because Eiheiji is a place of training, tourists must abide by certain rules, but through general viewing you can get a glimpse of the atmosphere of a Zen temple and part of the life of a monk. Zen meditation and sutra copying experiences (reservations required) are also available, and are recommended for those who want to experience the spirit of Zen on a deeper level. It is the perfect place for those who want to experience Japanese spiritual culture and spend some quiet time.
