Iwami Ginzan is located in Oda City, Shimane Prefecture, and at its peak in the early 16th century, it produced approximately 38 tons of silver per year, accounting for several tens of percent of the world's production at the time. Not only the remains of the mine, but also the port where the silver was refined, transported, and shipped, were all registered as a comprehensive cultural landscape. From the historic townscape of the Omori district to the quiet mountains of the Ginzan district, this is a special place where you can feel the weight of past prosperity and history.
The main tourist attraction of Iwami Ginzan is a stroll from the Omori district to the Ginzan district. The Omori district is where the Ginzan Daikansho was once located, and has a historic streetscape that still retains the atmosphere of the prosperous era. There are cafes, souvenir shops, and museums that have been renovated from old houses, so you can enjoy a leisurely stroll. **Personally, taking a break at an old house cafe like Cafe Jyuryu is a must-do to soak up the atmosphere of this town. **From here, you can head to the Ginzan district by rental bicycle or on foot. Since general vehicles are restricted from entering the area, it is recommended to walk along the mountain paths rich in nature or travel by electric assist bicycle.

Once you enter the Ginzan district, you will see the remains of mines scattered throughout the lush mountains. A particularly popular viewing spot is **Ryugenji Mabu, the only mine tunnel whose inside is open to the public**. You can enter the tunnels that were actually used, and the rock surfaces hand-carved with chisels and the space that recalls the harsh labor of the time will make you feel the weight of history. The inside of the tunnels is cool, so it's a good idea to bring a jacket even in summer. You will be deeply impressed by the extraordinary efforts and skills of the people who dug here at the time.

Iwami Ginzan is a rare site that has been registered as a World Heritage Site as a "Mining Ruins and Cultural Landscape". This means that not only the mine itself but also a wide range of cultural elements related to the silver mine, from the lives of the people who supported the mine, the transportation routes, the port, and even their faith, have been recognized. Therefore, when you visit this area, be sure to take a stroll while being aware of the history of the Omori townscape, Ryugenji tunnels, and even Sennoyama (the mountain that served as a fortress to protect the silver mine). **This is a place that is unique in Japan, where nature, history, and human activities are deeply connected, and where you can experience deep emotions. **We highly recommend taking a full day to explore the area.

As for parking, the Iwami Ginzan World Heritage Center parking lot is recommended, but it is undeniable that it is inconvenient to travel by bus. Outside of peak season, parking lots around the entrance to the Omori district are also free to use.
