This district, which stretches along the Utsubuki Tamagawa River in Kurayoshi City, Tottori Prefecture, has preserved about 100 storehouses and townhouses built from the Edo period through to the Taisho and Showa periods. The contrast between the white plaster walls and the red roofing tiles made from Sekishu tiles, which are highly weather-resistant and can withstand the snow in winter, creates a landscape that symbolizes the streets of Kurayoshi.
The area is extremely well preserved, and the greatest attraction is that the storehouses and townhouses from that time are still actively used as stores and residences. A variety of facilities, such as cafes, general stores, galleries, and souvenir shops that have been renovated from storehouses, are scattered throughout the area, making it a fun strolling area just to look around. In particular, the group of facilities numbered "Akagawara No. 1 Building" to "Akagawara No. 20 Building" each have their own elaborate exhibitions and experiences, and there is also a tasting corner that uses the former soy sauce brewery.

No matter where you look, you will see photogenic scenery such as the monolithic stone bridge over Tamagawa River, the carp swimming on the river, and the noren curtains hanging from the eaves of the storehouses. At dusk, the area is lit up, and the white plaster walls and red tiles stand out in a fantastical light. There are no major attractions, but it is the perfect spot to stroll slowly through the quiet and calm streets and enjoy the atmosphere of good old Japan.

[Trivia]

- The white plaster on the walls acts as insulation and waterproofing, and the red roofing tiles (Sekishu tiles) are fired in the Iwami region of Shimane Prefecture and are highly durable and resistant to frost damage.

- This group of storehouses along the Tamagawa River is part of the Utsubuki Tamagawa Traditional Buildings Preservation District and has been selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Fragrant Landscapes and 100 Best Historical Landscapes.

- There are several single-stone bridges along the river, and their gentle curves add an accent to the scenery.
