Shukkeien Garden in Hiroshima City is the garden of a villa built in the early Edo period for the feudal lord of Hiroshima. As the name "Shukukei" (Shukukei) suggests, it is a stroll-style garden with a pond that condenses Japan's famous scenic spots, and you can enjoy beautiful scenery in every season.
Shukkeien Garden was commissioned by Asano Nagaakira, the first feudal lord of Hiroshima, and was designed by his elder retainer Ueda Soko, who was also a tea master. It is said to have been modeled after the scenic West Lake in China, and the small garden is skillfully arranged with mountains, valleys, rivers, and islands, creating a landscape that seems to condense the beautiful nature of Japan. There is a walking path around the pond, and it is a strolling garden where you can see different views every time you walk. Teahouses, gazebos, and bridges scattered throughout the garden add to the charm of the garden.

The garden was devastated by the atomic bombing of 1945, but was restored thanks to the efforts of local people. Today, it is once again a popular place for many people to find peace. The park shows off beautiful faces throughout the seasons, with cherry blossoms and plum blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, autumn leaves in autumn, and snowscapes in winter. During cherry blossom season in particular, the park is lit up at night, creating a fantastical atmosphere.
