Shikoku Karst, which stretches across Ehime and Kochi prefectures, is one of Japan's three major karst regions, stretching over 1,000 meters above sea level. Its idyllic scenery of white limestone, green grasslands, and grazing cows is a sight to behold.
Shikoku Karst is a magnificent karst plateau that stretches for about 25 km from east to west, with an elevation of about 1,485 m at its highest point (Tengu Plateau). The limestone is eroded by rainwater, resulting in white rocks called "Kallenfeld" that are exposed on the surface. The white rocks dotted among the green grasslands look like flocks of sheep resting there, and are so beautiful that they are called "Japan's Switzerland." From spring to autumn, cows are pastured here, creating an even more pastoral atmosphere.

Shikoku Karst has several areas, including Tengu Plateau, Mezurudaira, Godan Plateau, and Onogahara. Each area has a different view and atmosphere, and there is plenty to see. Tengu Plateau has a lodging facility called "Starry Village TENGU," where you can enjoy the starry sky at night. Himezuruhira is a tourist hub dotted with campsites, cottages, and ranches, where you can enjoy the outdoors while taking in the magnificent scenery. Cycling maps are also available, so we recommend cycling.

It can be accessed from the Matsuyama Expressway or the Kochi Expressway, but driving along mountain roads requires caution. In winter, some sections may be closed due to snowfall. This is a scenic spot that represents Shikoku and is a must-visit for those who want to experience something out of the ordinary in the great outdoors, be soothed by the idyllic scenery, and enjoy stargazing.

[Trivia]
The Shikoku Karst is the highest of the three major karsts in Japan, and the majesty of its scenery is exceptional. This area is also a treasure trove of rare highland plants, such as the Mitsuba Azalea and the Japanese Starflower, and various flowers bloom in every season.

[Hidden gem information]
Located on the western edge of the Shikoku Karst, Onogahara is a karst topography just like Tengu Kogen, but because it is home to a small settlement town, it is dotted with ranches and pensions, creating a tranquil landscape reminiscent of Hokkaido. It is a hidden gem that is relatively unpopular and recommended for those who want to quietly enjoy the karst scenery. There are also dairy product stores and a petting farm, so you can have a unique local experience.
