Itsukushima Shrine in Miyajima, Hiroshima Prefecture, is a World Heritage Site characterized by its floating shrine and large torii gate. You can enjoy different fantastical views at low and high tide.
Itsukushima Shrine, located in Miyajima-cho, Hatsukaichi City, Hiroshima Prefecture, is a shrine with a history of about 1,400 years, said to have been founded in the first year of the reign of Empress Suiko (593). Its greatest features are the shrine building built on the sea, which changes its appearance depending on the tide, and the large vermilion-painted torii gate standing offshore. At low tide, you can walk to the base of the torii gate, and at high tide, the shrine building appears to be floating on the sea, and this fantastic sight truly symbolizes Miyajima, the "island of the gods." In 1996, it was registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many people from both Japan and abroad visit it as one of Japan's leading tourist destinations.

Itsukushima Shrine has been worshiped as the guardian deity of maritime traffic. In the late Heian period, Taira no Kiyomori was a devout believer and is said to have built the foundations of the current shrine building. The corridor of the shrine building has small gaps in the floorboards to protect against high tides, and you can see the ingenuity unique to marine architecture. In addition to the main hall, there are many other sights to see, such as the guest shrine and the Noh stage, and you can enjoy the history and architectural beauty. The illuminations start at dusk, creating a mysterious atmosphere that is different from the daytime.

There is also a ropeway that goes up to the top of Mount Misen, which is 535 meters above sea level in the center of Miyajima, and there are monkeys at the top.

It is a tourist destination with many things to see, including spectacular views, history, townscapes, and souvenirs.
The autumn leaves season on Miyajima is from mid- to late November.

To access by public transportation, take the Sanyo Main Line from Hiroshima Station towards Iwakuni for about 30 minutes and get off at Miyajimaguchi. From there, it is about a 5-minute ferry ride.
