Ikoji Temple is known for its beautiful garden, said to have been designed by Sesshu, a master of ink painting. The garden, which is a semi-circular pond garden that harmonizes with nature, is a tranquil space that evokes the spirit of Zen.
Ikoji Temple is a Rinzai sect temple in Masuda City, Shimane Prefecture. Its greatest attraction is the garden, which is said to have been designed by Sesshu, a master of ink painting and landscape designer in the Muromachi period. This garden has been designated as a national historic site and a place of scenic beauty. It is said that Sesshu applied his ink painting techniques to the garden, and it is a semi-circular garden with a pond that skillfully makes use of the natural topography. The pond, waterfall, and artificial hills seem to express the world of ink painting in three dimensions, inviting the viewer into a world of tranquil beauty. It shows different expressions with each season, and its beauty is especially striking during the season of fresh greenery and autumn leaves.

You can sit and enjoy the garden at your leisure from the shoin, which is a study from which you can view the garden. At the back of the garden, there are buildings such as the main hall and the founder's hall, and it is enveloped in the solemn atmosphere unique to Zen temples. By quietly gazing at the garden and experiencing the spirit of Zen, you will be able to forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life and calm your mind. One way to enjoy the garden is to explore it while imagining how Sesshu created it and his intentions.

The temple gate was moved from the Otemon Gate of Nanao Castle and has a great atmosphere.

The garden of Manpukuji Temple, located about 500m to the west, was also created by Sesshu and has been designated a national place of scenic beauty.
