Mikurodo Cave is a cave where Kukai (Kobo Daishi) is said to have practiced asceticism in his youth. It is said that during his training here, Kukai attained enlightenment and was given the pen name "Kukai" due to the scenery where only the sky and the sea could be seen. Just above Mikurodo Cave is Hotsumisakiji Temple, the 24th temple of the 88 Shikoku Pilgrimage.
