Hanagakuji Temple is the family temple of the Asano clan, the feudal lords of Ako, and is associated with the Ako Gishi, famous for the Chushingura story. It is a place where you can feel history and deep faith.
Hanagakuji Temple, located in Ako City, Hyogo Prefecture, was built as the family temple of the Asano, Nagai, and Mori families, who were successive feudal lords of the Ako domain. In particular, the temple is known nationwide as a temple associated with the Ako Gishi, as it was the site of the graveyard of the 47 Gishi after Asano Takumi no Kami Naganori committed seppuku during the Genroku Ako Incident (Chushingura). The graves of the Gishi, including Oishi Kuranosuke Yoshio, are neatly lined up within the temple grounds, quietly conveying the weight of history.

The temple also houses the Gishi Treasure Museum and the Gishi Wooden Statue Hall, where relics believed to have been used by the Gishi, valuable materials related to Chushingura, and wooden statues of the Gishi are on display. Through these exhibits, visitors can gain a deeper understanding of the spirit of loyalty of the Ako Gishi and the historical background of the time. In addition, the mountain gate, which is said to have been relocated from the Nishisōmon Gate of Ako Castle, has the dignity of a samurai gate and is considered to have high historical value.
