Saimyoji Temple was built in 834 AD and was mostly burned down by Oda Nobunaga. Along with Kongorinji and Kudaraji, it is counted as one of the "Three Mountains of Koto".
Saimyoji was founded in 834, the first year of the Heian period, by Sanshu Shonin at the request of Emperor Ninmyo. During the Warring States period, it was devastated by war, but it was rebuilt by Yukan Mochizuki in the middle of the Edo period.

The main hall and three-storied pagoda do not use a single nail and are designated as national treasures.
