Hannya-ji Temple is a flower temple affectionately known as the "Cosmos Temple." Its attractions include its national treasure tower gate and the beautiful scenery created by the flowers of each season.
Located in Hannya-ji-cho, Nara City, Hannya-ji Temple is an ancient temple of the Shingon sect that is said to have been established in the Asuka period. In particular, about 150,000 cosmos flowers bloom all over the temple grounds in autumn, and the scenery of the stone Buddha statues being enveloped in these lovely flowers is famous as the "Temple of Flowers." In addition, various flowers decorate the temple grounds throughout the year, such as hydrangeas in early summer, mountain bush laurels in spring, and daffodils in winter. Due to its beautiful scenery, it is a popular spot for photography and flower lovers.

The highlights of the temple grounds are the tower gate built in the Kamakura period, which is designated as a national treasure, and the 14.2-meter-tall thirteen-story stone pagoda (Important Cultural Property). The contrast between these historical buildings and the flowers of the four seasons is a unique charm of Hannya-ji Temple. In recent years, the "hydrangea glass ball," which is a glass ball with flowers floating in it during the hydrangea season, has become a hot topic on social media, and it has also attracted attention as an Instagram-worthy spot where you can take beautiful, photogenic photos.

During the Heian period, Hannya-ji Temple fell into decline after being burned down by Taira no Shigehira, but was rebuilt in the Kamakura period.
