Kamigamo Shrine is one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto and a World Heritage Site. It is famous for the Aoi Festival, but the clear water and vast grounds allow you to enjoy the beautiful nature throughout the four seasons.
Kamigamo Shrine (Kamo Wakeikazuchi Shrine), located in Kita-ku, Kyoto City, is one of Kyoto's oldest shrines, registered as part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site "Cultural Assets of Ancient Kyoto." The deity enshrined here is Kamo Wakeikazuchi no Okami, known for warding off evil and lightning, and for bringing good fortune.

Kamigamo Shrine is also known as Kamo Wakeikazuchi Shrine, and is a shrine that enshrines the god of thunder.

It is famous as the starting point of the Aoi Festival (held on May 15th), one of Kyoto's three major festivals, and many people visit every year to watch the elegant procession.

The grounds are vast, and there are many shrine buildings designated as Important Cultural Properties, including the National Treasure "Main Hall" and "Gonden," which convey the architectural style of the Heian period to the present day. In particular, the clear waters of the "Omonoimikawa" and "Nara no Ogawa" that flow through the grounds create a sacred atmosphere and are said to cleanse the soul. Also, on May 5th every year, the Kamo Horse Race is held to pray for a good harvest, and you can see a powerful ritual similar to Yabusame.

[Trivia]
Kamigamo Shrine, together with Shimogamo Shrine (Kamo Mioya Shrine), is collectively known as Kamosha, and is considered to be one of the oldest shrines in Kyoto. In the Aoi Festival, participants in the procession wear Aoi leaves, hence the name. There is a subsidiary shrine called Kataokasha within the precincts, which is popular among women as a god of matchmaking.
