Jojakkoji Temple is a famous Nichiren sect temple located in Arashiyama, Kyoto. It is particularly known as a famous spot for viewing autumn leaves, and is an ancient temple with a charming, serene atmosphere.
Jojakkoji Temple is a hidden gem that sits quietly at the foot of Mt. Ogura and attracts many tourists. In autumn, the maples turn fiery red and gold, creating a breathtaking contrast with the pagoda and Niomon Gate. The moss-covered garden is also beautiful, allowing you to experience the changing of nature through the seasons. The temple is especially crowded with people during the autumn foliage season.

As you stroll through the temple grounds, the sounds of the wind and the chirps of birds echoing through the silence are soothing, helping you forget the hustle and bustle of everyday life. In this space where historic buildings and nature are in perfect harmony, you will be able to calm your mind and have a valuable experience of coming into contact with Japanese aesthetics.

Jojakkoji Temple is also known as the place where the Hyakunin Isshu was compiled (a sacred place for waka poetry), and it is said that the Ogura Sanso villa where Fujiwara Teika compiled the Ogura Hyakunin Isshu was located.

Tenryu-ji Temple is located on the southeast side across the train tracks.
