The rock wall with columnar joints, about 2 kilometers long and about 50 to 60 meters high, was formed by ancient undersea volcanic activity. The cliffs, eroded by the rough waves crashing on the shore, boast overwhelming power and beauty.

There are observation decks and promenades around Sandanbeki, so you can enjoy the spectacular views from various angles. There are also many other sights to see, such as caves and spouting rocks.

The great advantage of Sandanbeki Cave is that you can experience its dynamic natural beauty and historical romance at the same time. If you take the elevator down to 36 meters underground, you can see the rough waves crashing on the shore up close, and the power of the sight is overwhelming. Inside the cave, a guardhouse of the Kumano Navy, which played an active role in the Genpei War, has been reproduced, allowing you to recall what it was like at the time. It is also famous as a power spot, with Japan's largest bronze statue of Muro Daibenzaiten enshrined there.

There is a free Sandanbeki Footbath where you can enjoy a panoramic view of Sandanbeki while soaking your feet.
