Kumano Shrine is the head shrine of the 3,000 Kumano shrines nationwide, and is also one of the Kumano Sanzan (Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha).
The deity enshrined at Kumano Hongu Taisha is Ketsumimiko no Okami. Ietsu Mimiko Okami is the principal image of Kumano Gongen, which is the general term for Kumano Sanzan, and is worshiped as the god of the earth.

Kumano Hongu Taisha has a long history and is said to have been built in the 65th year of Emperor Sujin (33 BC). After that, during the Heian period, it prospered as a sacred place for Shugendo and was visited by many worshipers.

The grounds of Kumano Hongu Taisha include the main shrine, worship hall, shrine gate, and shrine garden. The main shrine is designated as a national important cultural property.
