Mount Hyonosen has a variety of hiking courses that can be enjoyed by beginners and experienced climbers alike. From the main trailheads, you can choose a route according to your physical strength and experience, such as a maintained promenade or a steep climb. From the summit, you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama, with views stretching out to the Sea of Japan and the mountains of the Chugoku Mountains in the distance. The majestic scenery viewed in the clear air is so moving that it will make you forget the fatigue of climbing. In addition, the foot of the mountain is covered with a virgin beech forest, which is home to rare flora and fauna, making it an ideal place for nature observation and forest bathing.
In winter, it transforms into a vast ski resort, and is popular as one of the best ski resorts in western Japan. The high-quality snow and variety of courses make it the perfect playground for ski and snowboard enthusiasts.
On the west side is Wakasa Hyonose Ski Resort, and on the east side is Hyonose International Ski Resort.
It is a popular mountain for hiking, but it is also famous among photographers for the "upside-down Hyonose" shot from the terraced rice fields of Betsumiya.
[About climbing]
The trailhead is located near the ski resort and campsite on the Tottori side.
There are about three hiking courses, but beginners should choose the "Hinogoe Course". The "Sengoku Course" and "Sannomaru Course" are for intermediate and advanced skiers with steep slopes.
The Hyonose Course takes about two and a half hours to reach the summit.
