The townscape is lined with merchant houses built from the Edo period to the Meiji period, and is characterized by fireproof walls called "udatsu" made from Mino washi paper. Udatsu are walls with higher ends on both sides of the roof, and served to prevent the spread of fire in the event of a fire.

There are also plenty of old-style cafes, Japanese sweet shops, and souvenir shops selling local pottery, so you can enjoy a break and shopping in between your strolls. We also recommend a night walk at dusk, when the streetlights light up the cobblestones, making the area even more atmospheric.
