This unusual shrine is located in a cave in a cliff facing the Hyuga-Nada Sea. It is a mysterious power spot known for granting blessings for safe childbirth, matchmaking, and safety at sea.
Udo Jingu Shrine is located in Nichinan City, Miyazaki Prefecture. Its main shrine is located in a cave in the middle of a cliff jutting out into the Hyuga Sea. It is a very rare shrine in Japan.
Many tourists visit the shrine due to its unique location and its history colored by sea myths. The main deity is Ugayafukiaezu no Mikoto, the father of Emperor Jimmu, and it is said to grant blessings such as safe childbirth, child rearing, matchmaking, safety at sea, and bountiful catches, and it is especially revered as a power spot by women. The main shrine in the cave is painted in a vivid vermilion color, and the contrast with the rock surface creates a mysterious atmosphere.
Going down the road lined with vermilion stone fences, you will see a cave near the shore. At the entrance to the cave, there is a turtle-shaped rock formed by sea erosion, and a popular game of "lucky ball throwing" is to throw a terracotta "lucky ball" into the depression on the rock's back to make your wish come true. Men should throw with their left hand, and women with their right hand, making a wish. It is said that if the lucky ball falls into the depression, your wish will come true, so many people try it.
Udo Shrine is located in the midst of majestic nature, on cliffs where the rough waves of the Pacific Ocean crash, but its mysterious space is what makes it so appealing. It is a representative power spot in Miyazaki, where you can feel the energy and history of the sea and a mysterious atmosphere at the same time.
[Trivia]
From the ceiling of the cave where the main hall of Udo Shrine is located, there is a "milk water" that catches water dripping from the "milk rock" that resembles breast milk. This comes from the myth that Toyotamahime, the mother of Ubuki-no-Fuki-Azume, gave her baby the milk of the rock instead of milk after giving birth.
