The rock cliffs make it a powerful power spot, exuding an immense force.
The approach to the temple grounds is lined with stone steps surrounded by cedar groves, and along the way, towering cedar trees hundreds of years old, further enhancing the miraculous atmosphere. Particularly famous is the "Sakugyoba" (shackled area), where worshippers must climb a giant chain to enter the temple. While a detour has now been set up for safety reasons, the sight, which speaks to the rigors of the pilgrimage in the past, leaves a deep impression on those who see it.
Due to its geographical location, Iwaya-ji Temple is so difficult that it's sometimes called a "pilgrim killer," but that's precisely why the sense of accomplishment upon reaching it is all the more impressive.
[Helpful Notes]
It's about a 20-minute walk from the parking lot to the temple grounds. Since you'll need to climb some stairs, it may take a little longer depending on your leg strength. Including time for worship, you should allow at least an hour.
The easiest way to access the temple is via National Route 440 from Matsuyama IC and then Prefectural Route 12. If you approach from the east side of National Route 440, the road is narrow and winding.
