The Awa Earth Pillars, standing tall among the hills of Awa City, Tokushima Prefecture, are a spectacular sight of "earth pillars" formed by wind and rain eroding sedimentary layers dating back approximately one million years. The five peaks, including the largest, Hatodake, are connected together, along with Torodake, Furodake, Ushiodake, and Tachibanatake, creating a stunning sight of their pillar-like and curtain-like formations. From the main observation decks (upper and lower), you can get a close-up look at the geological layers, and the contrast between the seasonal trees and the rugged soil makes for a photogenic sight. At night, the area is lit up, creating a mystical atmosphere with the golden, strangely shaped rock formations.

Follow the walking trail to the thrilling viewpoint at the summit of Hatodake. The view of the earth pillars at your feet is unparalleled, and the appeal is that you can enjoy them from different angles: from above, in front, and from the base of the mountain, where barrier-free access is available. Furthermore, once you reach the top of the hiking trail on the slope, you will come across a gazebo with a panoramic view of the Yoshino River basin and Mt. Bizan. The tour takes around 40 minutes if you just want to look around, or from an hour if you want to extend your trip to the peak, so you can choose the length of time that suits your itinerary.
