A curated guide to Okayama’s most charming historic towns. Discover Kurashiki Bikan District, Katsuyama, Yakage-juku, Ushimado, plus the copper-red streets of Fukiya Furusato Village and Shinjo’s cherry-lined Gaisen-zakura Street. Perfect for kimono strolls, photos, café stops, and easy day trips.
Okayama Prefecture has several well-preserved historic towns that make it easy to build a trip around strolling and taking photos. Famous spots like Kurashiki Bikan District, Katsuyama townscape, and Yakage-juku (a former post town) are well signed, easy to visit, and popular with first-time visitors.

You can also see more unique places, such as Fukiya Furusato Village with its red-bengara townscape, or Shinjo Village’s Gaisen-zakura Street, which becomes a tunnel of cherry blossoms in spring. Adding the seaside town of Ushimado gives your route a nice change of scenery.

Many areas now have kimono rental, retro-style cafés, and renovated old houses, so these towns work well for couples, small groups, and international travelers. If you rent a car, you can visit 2–3 towns in one day and experience “historic Okayama” in a compact trip.
