Located on the border between Hiroshima and Shimane prefectures, this 1,239m high mountain is a gently sloping plateau. Its primeval beech forests and diverse alpine plants are its attractions, and there are trekking courses that even beginners can enjoy.
Mount Azuma is characterized by its gentle mountain shape at an altitude of 1,239 meters. The nature of the Chugoku Mountains is abundant, and the virgin beech forest is particularly impressive. From spring to summer, alpine plants such as rockfoil and marsh marigold bloom in abundance, welcoming climbers with beautiful flowers. In autumn, the beech forest turns vibrant red, making it a popular scenic spot that shows different faces throughout the seasons.

There are several trekking courses up to the summit, so even beginners can enjoy hiking relatively easily. The particularly popular route from the "National Vacation Village Mount Azuma Lodge (closed)" is a gentle climb that allows you to enjoy the rich nature while walking. From the summit, you can enjoy a 360-degree panorama, with a view of the distant mountains and the plateau below. On a clear day, you can even see the Sea of Japan.

It takes about 30 minutes to climb from the Vacation Village Mount Azuma Lodge on the Shobara side of Hiroshima Prefecture. It's a good place for families with children to go hiking and have a picnic.
However, there are few shady areas, so it's hot in the summer.

[Hidden gem]
"Daizenbara" near the summit has a spacious grassland that is perfect for a picnic. It's a great place to take a relaxing break in an open space.
There is also the popular "Azumayama Daizenbara Campsite" for advanced hikers in Daizenbara.

[Useful points of concern]
"Kyuka Mura Azumayama Lodge" will be closed at the end of March 2021.
