Manza Onsen is a popular hot spring resort located at an altitude of 1,800m, known for its scenery and spring quality. It is a hidden hot spring that is attractive for its rich, milky sulfur springs and the spectacular view above the clouds.
Manza Onsen is located in Tsumagoi Village, Agatsuma District, Gunma Prefecture, at an altitude of about 1,800 meters, and is truly a "hot spring town above the clouds." Its greatest feature is its rich milky hot spring, which boasts one of the highest sulfur contents in Japan. The abundant water and excellent quality of the spring have made it known as a hot spring resort since ancient times, and it is said to be effective for all illnesses. In particular, it is said to be effective for neuralgia, muscle pain, cold sensitivity, joint pain, high blood pressure, skin diseases, and respiratory diseases, and many people visit in search of the hot springs that are rich in medicinal properties. There are several inns and hotels scattered around the hot spring town, each equipped with a different open-air bath and indoor bath.
Another attraction of Manza Onsen is its majestic nature and spectacular views. Due to its high altitude, the surrounding area is filled with untouched, abundant nature, and the area shows different beautiful faces with each season. From spring to summer, alpine plants bloom in full bloom, and you can enjoy colorful scenery. In autumn, the mountains are dyed in fiery red leaves, and the contrast between the hot springs and the autumn leaves is breathtakingly beautiful. In winter, the whole area is covered in snow, and the open-air baths with a view of the snow are particularly charming, allowing you to experience bathing in a fantastic snowy landscape.
The starry sky is also known for its beautiful views, attracting many tourists.
[Trivia]
The spring quality of Manza Onsen is said to have the highest sulfur content in Japan, and due to its high efficacy it is also said to be "a hot spring that is good for the five internal organs and six viscera". There are also places in the hot spring area where you can see the hot spring steam (Yubata) that naturally rises.
[Useful points of concern]
Sulfur springs are very irritating, so people with sensitive skin or who are not in good health should be careful not to bathe for long periods of time or to avoid getting sick from the hot springs.
