The "Old Town" stretches across the center of Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture, and is lined with merchant houses from the Edo to Meiji periods. It is an area full of historical atmosphere, known as "Little Kyoto of Hida". In particular, "Sanmachi Street", which divides Kamimachi and Shimomachi, has been designated as a nationally designated Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings, and the rows of lattice-doored townhouses, sake breweries, and miso shops still retain the atmosphere of the time. It is also recommended to take a rickshaw ride around the charming townscape.

One of the great pleasures of this townscape is finding gourmet food and souvenirs unique to Hida Takayama. Eating gourmet food such as Hida beef nigiri sushi, croquettes, and mitarashi dango is very popular with tourists. There are also many stores selling traditional Japanese sweets, local sake, and crafts such as Hida Shunkei, so you can find the perfect souvenir to remember your trip. You can enjoy a wide range of food, from masterpieces that highlight the craftsmanship of the artisans to casual local gourmet food.

Historical buildings such as Takayama Jinya and Sakurayama Hachiman Shrine are dotted around the old townscape, and by strolling around these areas you can get a deeper feel for the history and culture of Hida Takayama. In particular, the Takayama Festival is held in spring and autumn, and the sight of gorgeous floats parading through the town is a spectacular sight.
