Todowara on Hokkaido's Notsuke Peninsula is a fantastical landscape of dead, dead fir trees eroded by the sea. Experience the extraordinary desolate beauty.
Notsuke Peninsula, located in the eastern part of Hokkaido, is a unique peninsula formed by the longest sand spit in Japan. Todowara, which spreads out near the tip of the peninsula, is a spectacle of what was once a virgin forest of Japanese figs, but was destroyed by seawater infiltration due to subsidence. The weathered white trunks of Japanese figs scattered across the marshland and frozen Notsuke Bay create a mysterious atmosphere as if you have wandered into another world, and are also called the "end of the world."
In the cold season, this bleak scenery will chill not only your body but also your heart to the core.
On the way there, it is like a narrow peninsula, so the sea spreads out on both sides, creating a unique view.
The charm of Todowara is that it changes its appearance depending on the season. In summer, the contrast between the blue sky, green plants, and white dead trees is beautiful, and in winter, the entire area is covered in snow and ice, creating a spectacular view called the "ice horizon." Especially on clear winter days, Notsuke Bay freezes over, and the pure white horizon stretching into the distance blends with the desolate scenery of Todowara, overwhelming visitors. This scene, born out of the harsh natural environment, gives a sense of the preciousness of life and the passage of time.
Todowara, there is a walking trail from the Notsuke Peninsula Nature Center, so you can stroll along it. Depending on the season, tractor buses are also in operation, making it easy to get there. Come experience the one-of-a-kind scenery created by Hokkaido's majestic nature and the geological changes that occur there.
