Mihonoseki Lighthouse is a historic lighthouse built in the Meiji period, standing at the easternmost point of the Shimane Peninsula. It has been selected as one of the "100 most historically important lighthouses in the world" and is designated as an Important Cultural Property by the government. Its magnificent views overlooking the Sea of Japan and its stately appearance are its attractions, and you can relax and take a break at one of the nearby cafes.
Located at Jizozaki, the easternmost tip of the Shimane Peninsula, Mihonoseki Lighthouse is the oldest stone lighthouse in Sanin, first lit in 1898. It was the first active lighthouse in the country to be registered as a national tangible cultural property, and was subsequently designated as an important national cultural property on February 9, 2022. It has also been selected as one of the "100 Best Historically Important Lighthouses in the World" and "50 Best Lighthouses in Japan." It is also known as a scenic spot where you can see the majestic Sea of Japan and Mt. Daisen in one go, and is an attractive place that combines historical value and natural beauty.

The greatest attraction of Mihonoseki Lighthouse is its history, its solid stone appearance, and the majestic panorama of the Sea of Japan that can be seen from the lighthouse. It is said to have been built under the guidance of a French engineer during the Meiji period, and its sturdy structure continues to protect the safety of navigation even after more than 100 years. The lighthouse is surrounded by cliffs called Jizozaki, and you can enjoy the rugged beauty of natural formations. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Oki Islands, and the sense of openness is exceptional. The sky changes color at sunrise and sunset, creating a fantastic view.

Right next to the lighthouse is a cafe called the "Lighthouse Buffet," which was renovated from a former lighthouse staff residence. Here, you can enjoy light meals and coffee while looking out at the Sea of Japan. The interior of the lighthouse is generally not open to the public, but the view from this cafe alone is well worth the visit.

Mihonoseki Lighthouse is highly valued as a historical building, and is popular with photography enthusiasts due to its beautiful natural scenery. The promenade leading to the lighthouse runs along the coastline, so you can enjoy the drive itself. On windy or rainy days, you can feel the roughness of the Sea of Japan as the waves fly up. Personally, I think the contrast between the solidity of the lighthouse and the nature that surrounds it is the greatest attraction of this place.
